acans - one frag thriving, other struggling

Do different color variations of acans need different conditions to thrive, or is this a case of "every animal is different"?

I've got a red/orange color variation that has been thriving in my tank for well over a year. No matter the flow, no matter how high or low it is in the tank. I have another that is red/light blue that has been just barely holding on, regardless of placement, flow, etc.

I keep mines in a good amount of flow on the sandbed. I notice one time mines was struggling for a couple of days, come to find out it had sand in on it which was irriating it.
