Acanthastrea

I'm getting my first acanthastrea and was wondering if there are any pests that I need to be aware. I have not been able to find any information so far, but any input would be great. Thanks.

give it good lighting and good water quality and an occasional spot feeding and sit back and watch it grow. Numerous pests effect corals but there is little to prevent them from happening if that makes sense. You can dip the acan in some iodine before you put it in the tank but I would not sweat it unless you see flatworms on it or aptasia.

okay...thanks...i've been having some problems with asterina starfish on zoas, but I think I've gotten them all out now

What kind of acan is it and where is it coming from?

The australian acan's lords and micros like a lower to medium light.

Just don't want you to fry it 6" from a MH!!! Good luck, they are great corals.

I have better success with aussie acans and micros in higher light... Mine are 12" or so from my 400Watt 20K bulbs. Could be because they are 20K but they have seem to color shift for the better as well.

There's some type of bacterial infection that happens to some acans. I'm not sure what exactly it is but if yours get it, you'll see the polyps deflated and recession may start. I've lost one like that and one of my prized fruit loops acans currently is infected. But I dosed it with peroxide and I'll see how that works out or not.

^ Don't take my word for it. I just did it yesterday so I don't even know if it'll work or not. I placed the acan in a seperate container with tank water and added a few drops of hydrogen peroxide. I let it sit for a few minutes. Then I took out the acan and just poured the peroxide directly onto the infected area and then placed it back into the tank. Wish me luck. I'll let you know how it goes....

Unfortunately it's almost gone....only 2 polyps left out of 5. Pretty sad knowing I paid $160 for this nice "fruit loops acan". Totally bummed out:(
