ACIII Pro and Linksys Wireless-G Router

I about to leave on vacation in a couple days and would REALLY like to figure out how to get my ACIII Pro on the internet so I can monitor it from another location. This was the main reason why I purchased this particular unit because of this capability but so far I'm stumped.

I currently have the AquaController connected directly to my Linksys Wireless G (with "Speedboost"/Cisco Systems) via an Ethernet cable. I also have Aquanotes installed and directly connected to my PC via direct cable. I also have the ISS enabled on my XP Professional operating system. My IP address for the linksys is broadcasting correctly (I can log on to see it) but I can't seem to reach the AquaController's IP for some reason.

Has anyone done this already and know what setting(s) to change on the Linksys router??? Or is there something else I have to configure?
I really don't want to go through the torture of calling Linksys to research this issue...I've been down that road before; I'd rather do my own root canal

Thanks for any help offered.

There are a few threads on this forum that go through some of the details, but here is a rough sketch.

1) I would first make sure you can see the ACIII directly on your home network (without using Aquanotes). To do this, make sure you have an IP addres assigned to the ACIII using the same scheme you have for your network, such as 192.168.1.X where is the unique part of the address that identifies the ACIII. The instruction manual tells you how to set up the net work settings.

2) Check and see if you cal log into the ACIII on your network. TO do this, type in the unique IP address you gave the ACIII into the address bar of your web browser. The logon screen for the ACIII should show up.

3) Now you have to change the settings in Aquanotes to access the ACIII via ethernet instead of the serial cable. These options are on the setup screen where you set the com port under the setting for AC3. Again in these settings you have to tell Aquanotes the unique ip address where it can find the ACIII, Once this is typed in, Aquanotes should be able to find the ACIII over your wired ethernet connection.

4) You now have to make the computer running Aquanotes available over the internet. If you have a public IP address then you can simply direct incoming web requests to the computer running aquanotes. You do this inthe port forwarding settings in your router. If you do not have apublic IP address, then it is another ball of wax to get a dns forwarding. There are also threads (many) on how to do this. See if you can get to step 3 and then we can go from there.

Anyone else chime in.

Kevin,

Almost 100% guarantee it's a firewall issue. (either at your ISP or on your connection)

1) What is your internet connection? (many block port 80 which is the standard http request port, but there are work arounds).

2) How is your internet connected (directly to your PC... To a piece of hardware i.e. a Cable Modem -> Router or Switch -> PC... Something else)?

3) Can you goto (from your pc) http://192.168.100.50 (or whatever ip you have your ACIII setup) and log in?

4) What do you want to connect to via http request... there are 2 options: 1) ACIII directly, or 2) Aquanotes WEB and then the ACIII via Aquanotes Web.

Feel free to IM me... DvHochheiser (or PM me here, but it might be quicker IM way)

Thanks Ken and Dave for both of your help.
I have it up on the internet now, but only temporarily.
For some reason the ACIII does not show up on the DHCP Clients Table (on the linksys) so a buddy of mine hooked it up via the DMZ (gaming port) I heard that this is not the correct way to do it for security reasons but at least I'll have access while on vacation. I leave in less than 24 hours so I was pretty desperate.

Is this the way the two of you configured your controllers?

Thanks again,
Kevin

1) SBC DSL
2) Phone line --> cable modem --> linksys --> computer and ACIII are both hooked to back of linksys via ethernet cable
3) Yes, via 192.168.1.50 exactly......100.50 wouldn't work
4) For now all I wanted was the ACIII directly, to at least monitor conditions. Later when I have more time I'd like to access Aquatnotes too. I suppose it would have to be "hosted" wouldn't it?

Ok...

So far so good...

Do you know what public ip your machine is when it goes to the world wide web?

It's probably dynamic (which is another issue)...

But you can find out your ip by going to www.whatismyip.com.

Try http://yourpublicip

That will probally also not work (the ip is really your router's ip as assigned by your service provider)...

You will need to allow traffic through to your system next:
pull up your router configuration page (http://192.168.1.1 probably), on the standard lynksys routers there is an application and gaming page try opening up ports 80-81, and let them go through to your PC

Try the request to your machine again (it will probably not work, but that's because your cable/isp company is blocking port 80... so we'll use port 81 (hopefully they are not blocking that port).

You will need to configure iis to listen on port 81 (I can help with this, but I'm allready going long on this post so ask if you need it).

then try the request http://localhost:81 (if you get a webpage, you have setup iis properly... then try your http://yourpublicip:81 Dave

Wow multiple posts going on....

I have mine setup as a static ip default (192.168.1.50), but that's not a problem your router can handle static ip devices (as long as they are setup properly).

Thanks for your help Dave,
I've run out of time, so I'll address the rest of this when I get back in two weeks. I'm off to a cruise for the holidays!
Thanks again,
Kevin

what about getting a simple program like gotomypc.com and you can see everything on your computer

How did this turn out? Are you able to access your ACIII using AN over the wireless network instead of directly?

Giovanni,

He contacted me back some, but never finished it out...

I do use exactly this method...

Feel free to PM me with questions (or you can do it here... it might help others).

Hi everyone,
Dave, thanks for the followup on this. I never got around to setting this up correctly...I am still hooked up to my Linksys router via the gaming port/port forwarding command. The only way I can "see" my ACIII pro through the internet is to enter the WAN address into Internet Explorer (currently 75.1.245.50)

The problem is that I don't have a static IP address (I've heard I cannot get one through AOL) so the address constantly changes, of which I have to completely reset the controller manually and then paste the newest WAN address into the browser.
Of course I am not able to do this away from home so it kinda defeats the whole purpose. When I left on vacation, I was able to log into the controller for the first few days but then was locked out when the dynamic IP changed again. Very frustrating to say the least considering this is the main reason I spent so much more money for an ACIII Pro versus the junior model.
According to the IP site, my computer's IP address is 152.163.100.70 but I get nothing when I put that into a browser. Not sure exactly what's going on.

To make matters worse, we had a brief power outage yesterday and now my main computer won't go to my desktop anymore for some reason...it stays at the Microsoft XP page (the one with the MS quad flag and dark blue margins top and bottom) and now refuses to go to my opening desktop no matter how many times I reboot it. Ironically, I can get into the BIOS screen but I don't have a clue what to do so I didn't change anything. I am now on my alternate computer but I can still access my router as usual.

Well, that's the latest....any help on either issue is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Kevin

Go check out dyndns.org (won't help with your main computer), but will with the dyanmic ips...

You can pick a name (and as long as you don't care about a sub domain... i.e. hochhome.getmyip.com it's free) download a small app onto your computer and it will automatically update when you get a new dynamic ip.

Can this be done with the AC jr? How?

Most likely no, you would have had to order the Jr. with the optional serial connector.

Yes. Neptune has been very kind and gracious in letting us (if purchased in the last 30 days and in new condition) trade in our non serial Jrs for the serial Jrs. So I guess if I buy the aqua notes, ill be able to monitor my tank whil im away...right?
