Acropora Turned Brown, why?

Hi Guy

i acquired a large piece of a blue-tipped Acropora. i placed him under my A350W Kessis on the top of the tank. as timed passed, i noticed his tips becoming brown. he looks very healthy with alot of polyp extension, but beautiful colors seem to have turned brown.
is this due to excess light?

parameters are good! as all other corals are looking great.

should i move him to a place with lower light? or should i just keep him on its current spot?

im no expert but i do know that alot of frags i have gotten brown out and then get there color back as they acclimate to the tank.also may be from excessive nutrients in the tank

+1 sometimes they take awhile to get used to new conditions, have had a couple go brown eventually they come back

They turn brown when you don't have enough light usually or your tanks high nutrients and not yet mature.

A350 are more of a supplemental lighting. I have seen them used but not as the main source of lighting.

Did you dip the Coral? if you did they may be why. And if you didnt Dip it, YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO! or else your tank will be pest infestation!

+1 above, either not enough light, or too much nutrients. I recently changed out the purigen in my nano, ant all my SPS colored up in 3 days (they had good color, but now more vibrant). Only issue is most of my zoas are a little smaller now, LOL!

I doubt the situation is insufficient light. Plenty of PAR coming at the top of the tank from the Kessil. Could be partially excess nutrients and partially the way that you acclimated the frag to your system. IME, best to be conservative and start your new additions towards the lower third of your tank and move them up as appropriate and as someone else mentioned always dip your frag. Personally, I use CoralRX. 10 frags, no issues with any pests.

In December, I added a couple of frags and moved them up too quickly over a two week period and they browned out. Its been about 4 months, and the color is slowly coming back. For a while the only thing that kept me from giving up hope was there was some polyp extension on the frags.

Good luck with your situation.

Kessil A350s as main source of lighting over grow out tanks.

As already been suggested, many times new frags just become shocked by the parameter differences. This browns them out but over time they should adjust to your parameters and so long as they are in check the frags will colour up again. Sometimes even developing different colours than expected :-)

The brown color in sps comes from the original color of the the zoox. The color can be seen when there is a huge amonut of them which is caused by high nutrients or too much light. On the other hand it can be cause by a shortage of chromoprotienns. This is caused by stress, low light, small amount of trace elements or a shortage of energy which can be fixed by feeding coral food.:-)
