Acros growing out of the water, is it ok?

Couple of my colonies are growing out of the water. Some of the tips are above the water surface. Due to the small size of my tank and the lack of space, I can't move them to different locations. Will they be ok? I figure that they'll just stop growing upwards and start growing sideways. Am I correct to assume that?

i hate when that happens.=) sounds like your tank is a great success story. any bigger tank in the future for you. ps.. love the pics of yours frags on the other ie site.

Thanks. I wish I have time for a bigger tank. It's hard enough taking care of my little 30G with 2 small kids. Maybe when the kids start grade school I'll consider upgrading.

Kenny, I always chop em when they get that high..they'll probably flatten out as they grow, it just bugged me when they got that high.

I haven't had that problem with this new tank

i think the the general rule is once the colony is to big for the tank you need to give the colony up to someone with a bigger tank=) or frag the heck out of it.

The tips will eventually die from the light exposure and being out of water. And the coral will start to grow sideways and form a canopy. Not good becuase it'll cut off the light supply to the rest of the colony. So it's best to frag off the branches or move it to a different location. But the best solution is to upgrade IMO

I have a purple tip stag that is approaching that stage. Should I cut the trunk into frags and reattach the top part?

Yes, upgrade would be nice. But that would have to wait. Didn't think about the light blocking issue. I think I'll have do some trimming soon.
