Acrylic VS Glass

Hello All,

I am new and looking to start a reef tank. Would like to know about Acrylic vs Glass Tanks. Is it a preference basically, or is one preferred more than the other? Perhaps pros and cons with both?

I did try a search regarding this topic but found none.

Sorry, meant to post in Beginner Forum, so will do that. Can't delete here so perhaps someone will still respond.....

Thanks Much For The Help! MsFiction1

arcylic is lighter, stronger, and clearer

glass is cheaper and doesn't scratch as easily. If you get starfire glass (which is more expensive) the clearness is equal if not surpassing acrylic.

for nanos glass is much better because its not as easy to scratch and in small spaces that can happen alot and is cheaper. but for big tanks acrylic is much better because its lighter(less wieght on the stand) and its much easier to drill.(with big tanks theres almost no chance you not going to drill)

Acrylic tanks are easy to get any ANY size you need. Glass tanks come in pretty standard sizes and custom glass tanks are rather expensive.

I think most of us prefer glass for anything less than 150-200 gallons. Like others stated it does not scratch easy (it will last a lifetime).

For a first tank, glass is likely the way to go. Nothing worse the scratching the snot out of a new acrylic tank while you learn reef husbandry.

acrylic is not conductive, while glass is fairly conductive. an acrylic tank will hold its temp better, while a glass tank will not hold in heat as well nearly as long. this can be good or bad.

Thank You To All Who Replied!
I appreciate the input!
Will probably go with glass...

Again, Thanks For Responding!

I prefer glass, and for those custom sizes you can always go to glasscages .com or interamerican.
