Activated Carbon Harmful?

I put some into the chemical portion of my emperor filter(Removed mechanical filter and bio wheel as advised by others). When I turned the filter back on, a lot of smaller pieces entered into my tank and sunk into the sandbed. Are these harmful in any way?

actually yes.

activated carbon goes bad after a certain amount of time and can drag your reef down. thats why your suppose to replace your carbon often.

Try to remove as much of it as you can, but I think the tank will be just fine. In the future, be sure to put the carbon in a fine mesh media bag, and replace it at least every 2 weeks.
