Activated Carbon Usage

I run carbon only when I feel I need to. Such as after fragging many leathers in one tank, or my nutrient levels seem to be higher than normal. But I do not run in 24/7 like some. Just personal preference. I have been running Purigen 24/7 recently though due to a larger nitrate/phosphate spike, but that was due to over trimming my macroalgae last month....oops.

I was told that not to use carbon to much by my lfs cause it gives out phosphate. Is this true?

Beware of advice from a LFS. I've gotten lots of misleading information from LFS staff representing themselves as experts. But, then, that's probably why you're asking.

Phosphate is the result of breaking down waste and biological material. If you don't use RO/DI water, it can also result from phosphate load in your water source and the concentration that occurs over time because of evaporation.

Maybe (big maybe) carbon could accelerate the break down of waste as it does attract some organic molecules (gelbstuf/yellow waste), but I suspect this effect would be very weak at best.

I run carbon in my phosphate reactor. I fill it 2/3 full of phosphate remover and 1/3 of carbon on top. I think it's good to reduce any build up from dissolved copper and heavy metals. Also, my water doesn't turn yellow anymore towards the end of the month.

Some carbon brands can and will release phosphate because they are acid washed with phosphoric acid to expose pore structure (i.e. absorptive surface area and capacity). Brands like Black Diamond, which is what I recommend, don't release phosphate (though it did at some point). I see no adequate reason not to use it continuously.
