I put a healthy mandarin in about two weeks ago. I didn't quarantine. A few days ago I noticed an ulcer type sore on his right caudel fin about the size of my little fingernail. he doesn't seam too upset by it and I'm just standing by to see how it turns out. Yesterday I noticed my yellow tang had popeye in one eye and today he looked 10 times worse and had it in both eyes. I've since put him down for fear of him getting worse and in more suffering. Any ideas what is happening? parameters all seam well within range. so far my two tomato clowns are doing fine and the mandarin is still around, just still has the sore on his side. did the mandarin and the tang have a battle royale?

I think a more accurate statement would have been that you thought the fish was healthy. It wasn't. Too bad you by-passed the quarantine process.

The likelihood that the mandarin was in a fight is low but possible. It seems like each needs to be treated for a possible bacterial infection (possibly brought in by the mandarin) by an antibiotic.

Search RC for info on Popeye or check some of these threads:

Please be sure all your fishes are getting proper nutrition and being fed a proper diet:

only 1 left to treat..

can you take a pic of the mandarin?

Well, mandarin is gone too. the remaining fish are fine so far. I wanted to mention that if I sounded heartless about putting my tang out of it's misery, I hated it. But the poor fella was looking awful and he didn't need to suffer any more. I had him over a year and felt that the best thing for him was the freezer.

ooh..bit more suffering there.... 2 options:
1. cut the head off right behind the gill
2. add 4 alka seltzer tablets in small bowl(quickly removes O2)
