I have a 90gal sps tank that I'm not really happy with the results. Due to a lack of space under the tank I'm leaning towards a HOB type. Due to their size will I really gain much of a benefit?

For my 90g I'm using an Aquaclear 500 as a hang on fuge. It is full of chaeto and copepods. I have it hanging onto the sump. I don't use the pump that came with it. I use a small powerhead attached to air line tubing pushing water into the fuge, then overflowing into the sump. It's not too small and easy to clean.

As I understand, the refug. will be an additional source of filtration as well as being able to produce another food source. Plus the fact, that doing research, I read alot of post from various places that once a refug was added sps corals responded with better growth and color.

Ironman, with your setup, how much water is actually flowing through your refug and have you noticed any improved tank conditions.

cootiebugg, since it's not a big fuge I have about 50gph going through it.

I can't say if it has had a positive impact on my corals. My sps, softies, and lps seem to grow rather rapidly. I always see copepods in the live rock, I assume constantly fed by the fuge. I installed the fuge day one then added the corals shortly after.

Thanks Ironman, I still haven't made up my mind. But I can't find a down side to one. At the same time, I'm not convinced that a smaller HOB type is the way to go.
