Adding Tbs To 3 Year Old Reef

Is there any reason not to add TBS live rock to a 3 year old mixed reef. I have always liked the look of the TBS and the variety of organisms that have been found on peoples rocks that share in this thread. I have heard of parameters going out of whack after adding TBS such as amonia spikes from the die-off, this is what is holding me back from ordering and adding it to my tank. Im sure it has been done many times before so can someone share there experiences with this good and bad. thank you.

I wouldn't be concerned about a significant die-off from tbs rock. The rock being shipped in saltwater reduces the incidence of die-off imho - unless there's a problem in shipping or you leave the rock out of the water too long. I would be more concerned about any hitchers that are harmful for your existing tank. When you say mixed reef: I interpret as potentially acros, clams, shrooms etc.

I would not add it directly into a 3 yr. old reef. Order it and when it arrives, put it in a bucket with a heater and powerhead. This will insure you did or didn't have a cycle. If there is a cycle that is fine. Let it cycle in the bucket and when it's done you can add it to your tank.

I agree with MarksReef. Although many have had no appreciable cycle, there are also a number of folks (myself included) who had to fight a significant cycle (ammonia >3) for 3+ days. the odds are that you won't have that kind of a cycle, but why take the chance with a 3 yr. old reef.
