So this Sunday was choir day, Change out GFO, WC, Add Bicolor Blenny from QT to display, and test

After finishing everything i was so happy about my tank being stable and sps are finally encrusting/coloring up i decided to get myself a Canon T4i. came home played with it and its awesome.

Monday comes around, hmm.. some sps are receding strange, did not think about it as much

Tuesday comes around, holy crap stn from weird spots. test, everything comes out good. raised the lights a bit.

Wednesday comes. ok this is getting out of hand, Test again. See my Bicolor blenny nipping at some corals, removed and put in frag tank. Remove Frag and dip, No pest. REMOVED 1/2 OF GFO AND REDUCED FLOW

the only thing i changed was GFO, WC, And intiated Zeovit products (AA,C.V, Extra Special)

i rinsed the GFO with r/o before adding. added a little less amount from previous. ( i think i was 9teaspoons?)

and i read here GFO can cause some SPS issues if used improperly.
My question is, WAS it the GFO? or is it something else?

frag..

So i removed the bicolor blenny, cut the gfo in half and reduced the flow, raised the lights..

should i do a WC? Get a Polyfilter?

I have a Green Slimer starting with some stn, Hollywood Stunner, and Season Greeting as far as i can tell they all are starting to get some..

this was all tested today, and yes i do test my batch of salt when i first buy it, everything reads normally, and i wait acouple days after i mix my salt, then test, and it reads perfectly. I've been doing this for the past acouple months

Ca420
Alk7.6
Mg1300
Xtra 1.5ml Monday,Wednesday,Friday
Cv 3 drops Tuesday Thursday Saturdays
AA 2 drops Monday Wednesday Saturdays Sunday
2ml fws daily
I use rods food mixed with mysis and I feed them morning before I go to work, I just add about 2 squirts doubly about 1.5 ml? Then at night I turn the return pump off and add 2 more squirts followed by the zeo additives.

The pic of frag dipped looks exactly what my bicolor blenny is doing to some of my frags. My tank has been running for 9 months before I added my frags from quarantine tank and he is loving his new snacks. I have a 420 gallon that is 34 deep and 40 wide. I am having no luck catching the piece of crap. He loves styro and milli's.

THANK you KMB, i shouldve read about Blennys, did not know they were a PITA, luckily for me i ran into a rock and i was able to remove that rock..

Bi-color Blennies are extremely reef safe, this is the first time I have read anythign that is contrary to that, weird. where are your No3 and Po4 measurements? My money is on the GFO combined with a little alk swing but most likely the GFO. That second picture you posted is really strange; the tissue loss is dead center on the frag, the blenny might have been picking at the dead tissue. Following... hopefully some more experienced reefers will be able to give you a better idea.

Ps your alk is low for your cal levels

Dkh of 8.5 might be a better target as long as your nitrate (<1ppm) and phos(<.02) are extremely low

Before blaming the blenny, keep in mind he might be pecking at algae that recently grew on the spots which recently died. So while he's pecking "at" the corals, he's just hitting the algae.

My no3 is undetectable with Red Sea and my po4 is at .02 test with Hanna ppb meter. It doesn't explain why the blenny was pecking at my other frags? With heathy tissues, do a search and many will say they aren't reef safe

Ugh... Now my acan is showing signs of tissue loss, time to do some large water changes and poly filter... I will be checking ammonia and nitrate also

replacing GFO. Ive heard many people having the issue you are having. I never touched the stuff from all of the horror stories Ive heard but some swear by it. I would cut it back dramatically and slowly add back. sudden spikes are what kill sps.

I had stn issues a while back. Took gfo offline and went to biopellets... No more stn. I read a post that fine particles from gfo can land on sps and cause stn. Maybe it got out of your reactor and has done that

Thanks for the input guys very much appreciate it, it kills me so much to loose pieces I have for a long time ... It takes forever for them to grow and parish so fast
