Al (a1amap) keeps talking!

So, Al keeps talking about these DIYS LR projects. I've been nudging him for a couple of months now to give us a demonstration on how to do it. This would be a great club/family activity where we can all be creative and for a couple of bucks have something personal to add to our tanks.

At the last couple of meetings we have mainly been talking about organizing the new club and the website. Important stuff and I'm glad we got a lot of that taken care of, but now we need a good lecture on something practical for our tanks.

:-D How about it Al? :-P

I don't know whether to be flattered or offended. I was planning on doing this in the spring. That way we can do it outside and not ruin someones house. Then We can soak it outside without fear of the water freezing. I plan on using thorite hydraulic cement so the cure time will be reduced. I had to soak the rock with the salt for like 4 months. Using the new receipe it will cost a little more but cure a week and then soak for an additional 3 weeks.

No offense meant, just eager to learn. :-) Spring sounds good, though. I didn't think about the smell of it and the mess it would make. We really need a good topic for the next meeting.

What about:
- Energy conservation with our reefs. How to figure out how much power our reefs use and how to reduce it. Can buying a new light fixture, pump, or other equipment pay for themselves?

- Breeding clown fish and raising the food required to feed the fry. Possible guest lecturers include locals with experience!

- Fragging demonstration/demonstrations? I could bring in some xenia and mushrooms and cut them up under a 10g tank so no one gets shot by neurotoxins. Ken might be able to show us one as well.

- Building acrylic aquariums/baffles/other useful items. I know someone in the club has experience with this.

Just throwing some ideas out there. Gtg to class. l8r (BTW my PM box has lots of room now)

Oh yeah the next meeting topic Ken and I were talking about was fragging, mounting and safety. Zoas, mushroons, leathers, sps, xenia, etc

We have a lot of local talent here and I would love to have them give presentations. We are not at the point where we could afford a guest speaker. Some of our locals are very busy so I'm not pushing too hard but just trying to show that people are interested in what they have to say.

I would definatley be interested in any of the topics suggested.. especially the acrylic. I need to find a reasonable supplier around for 3/8 in thickness in an 8' x 4' sheet. I can find it online but the 150-200$ shipping charge hurts.

I too need to pick up some acrylic. Perhaps this may be a good opportunity for some sort of group buy? Is it cheaper if we buy more together? Perhaps we could just buy a large sheet locally and have them cut it a little bit?

I think that'd be a great topic. I hate fragging softies and could use some help! Especially also on other harder to frag corals, maybe like LPS corals etc.

I can bring the book of coral propogation if we had this meeting... and I could probably be convinced to bring a hairy mushroom rock that could be fragged off of. Probably about 7 full size shrooms on the rock.

I can talk about building acrylic tanks and stuff. Ive built about 7 tanks fro HD plexi and scrap from the local glass company. Acrylic is not cheap anymore. cost of oil and all its made from. I buy the plastic, glue and glue applicator bottles from
KAUFMAN GLASS
they used to be in a downttown wilmington neighborhood, but moved last year to Quigley ave. , the industrial loop behind auto dealers row, and acrross from the New Castle farmers market back door, near 13/273 intersection.

If we do something like that in the spring, or this summer, we can use my shady back yard. and garage for demo. and have a barbeque.

And hey, maybe I'll get you all to show up with a long handle shovel to help me dig my Koi pond too!! My fish are getting to big for the tub.

Ok, Ken sounds good. I'll make sure to borrow a shovel from my parents a little bit before the meeting. Which month?

maybe we could make the tank and idk raffle it off...make like a small 30 gallon or something? even better idea...have a barbecue at someones house....everyone could make the rocks and stuff...we could bring our owns bins everyone pitch in for sand and cement...make our own bins and everyone has there own rock...and then at the end of the barbecue raffle off the tank... (obviously pick it up when its done curing)..that would be awesome!!

I figured the barbecue could be an end of the meeting season say in June. I think mbbuna mentioned he would like to host a barbecue in a previous thread.
Anyway I was planning on making my rock in April if the weather is good and at the latest May to be ready for June.

For the BBQ I think the club can pick up the cost of the meat and soda. Have to vote on it yet. Everyone can bring a dish and we make it BYOB. I will send a pm to mbbuna since he mentioned it 2 weeks ago.
