Algae?

canar

Addicted to bright lights
I was at Marshall Mann's place a while back and he had some bright breen and white wormy looking stuff growing on his rock. I asked him what it was and he said it was an algae.

I am starting to get this now in my tank. I just spent an hour looking at pictures of different kinds of algae and can't seem to find it.

Any idea's?

Ted

if it was green with white tips it was a hawian type algea, forgot the name but look in my gallery there's a pic and someone posted the name of it.

Fuzzy Tip Algae....similar to Halimeda in which it is calcium based. Does nothing for filtration purposes, but looks cool.:)

How can you say that? All algea does absorb nutrients. It's called Spindleweed BTW.

If it the same as the "Mystery Macro" under your gallery, than it is Neomens annulata, common name Fuzzy Tip Algae. It is a calcareous macroalgae which means it has little or no use for nutrient export. Does poorly in high nitrate and phosphate systems.

It has little use correct. But all algaes do use nutrients from the system. And IMO, the more variety of good algea you have, the better.

It did well in my tank for a few months, and I know I had a pretty high nutrient tank.

I don't see anything in your gallery that looks like it. The stuff I have is not fuzzy. It is smooth and looks like tubes. It is neon green and bright white. Kind of cool looking actually. It is starting to grow in so many places though it is making me worry.

Its not like this?

Nobody ever said it didn't absorb nutrients.

Which is filtration, IMO.

Teremei - seriously, get over it. If you want to get technical about, mushrooms absorb nutrients too, more so than Neomens annulata. Maybe we should all put that in our fuge's as well:confused:

Now you're taking it too far, I never said we should put mushrooms in our fuge. I said having as many types of the good algea are good to have, and I think they are benificial. Mushrooms too, the more algeas and corals you have the more stuff you have to eat/take in all the tiny particles of food and nutrients your fish and skimmer don't. If you don't agree with this, then let's agree to disagree.

dude, chill out

it doesnt absorb much nutrients and would not be a good candidate to use specifically as nutrient export. why such hostility?

ive had that stuff too, it just kinda sprouts up randomly. i dont think you could really cultivate it to any extent anyways, since it seems to die and leave the calcium skeleton behind rather quickly. i was thinking that it then sent off spores so that more will sprout up later? idk, well interesting none the less
