algea taking over

fish are life

my friends tank is completely covered with algea, i asked and they say that they have little lighting if that would be a factor. it is set up with live rock but the algae is killing it and already killed all their polyps. They have a few crabs, what els do they need to get rid of it all? i recomended emerald crabs and turbo snails.

Also i was owndering if there is any place to get a fresh water blue eyed plece becuase they are extremely rare, and i cant find one.

get rid of nitrates... Really the only solution. Find out what is causing it. You can get snails or crabs but if the nitrates/trites are bad then they wont live long enough to take care of it. I suggest a big water change, and find the problem.

good luck :)

Algae feeds off the nutrients in the tank. So if they get the upper hand on that, they will get rid of the algae. How?
  • Aggressive protein skimming
  • Use of a refugium
  • Good source water - RO or RO/DI
  • Frequent water changes
  • Lowering any po4
  • Feeding less or lowering bio-load
  • Stable and on the higher end pH, alk, CA

thanks alot you guys, i already planned to go over there tomarrow to do a 40% water change and make shure their protien skimmer is producing enough foam. i will ask them how much they feed, they onle have 3 fish. and i will take some water to my work and run a water test.

I highly recommend Julian Sprung's book "Algae: A Problem Solver Guide." ISBN 1-883693-02-0. There are specific recommendations for controlling every kind of algae I have ever seen in one of my tanks.
