Alk and cal dosing

About to start a new tank and wanna things right this time and was wondering about the whole dosing alk and calcium thing.

1.Do i need to dose it right when i start my tank or when levels begin to drop?
2. Is getting a doser best or is there some way of doing it manually?
3. Would i be dosing everyday or week?
4. Is this something you do for a mainly sps tank or can i do it with a lps/sps tank as well?
5. Anything else i should know about this topic?

Start dosing when alkalinity drops. Most tanks need daily dosing.
