Alk & Mag - just curious....

Repeatedly I see people responding to posts where a hobbyist has requested help with their anemone and the responders ask what their Calcium, Alk & Mag test results are. The answers vary from hobbyist to hobbyist.

I'm just curious.... I can't find any responses that actually tell the hobbyist what the acceptable test results are/should be. Does anyone have a link to a post/research paper/study that actually details what acceptable ranges are for these tests to keep an anemone happy/healthy?

I'll be honest, I had a haddoni carpet for 8 years, a BTA for going on 6 years and I've never tested either Alk or Mag. However, were I to test it I'd like to know what results I'm aiming for and/or what additives I would need to add to achieve those result ranges.

If it ain't broke....

Very true! I wasn't planning on changing any of my husbandry techniques, I was more asking to gain the knowledge of what exactly "acceptable" results are.

I figure if I had difficulty finding the information, that maybe others would be interested in seeing the information as well.

Well, the only thing I have had anemones react negatively to is high alkalinity. And I don't mean run-of-the-mill elevated alkalinity--I am talking the high teen dKH range or 5+ meq/L. Many other people have noted this, as well. This is also one reason anemones don't like being hit with return laden with calcium reactor effluent.

I will admit before I had SPS in my tanks, I really never tested for those, but now that I do...

Cal, 400-450
Alk, 2.5 - 3.5 meq/L
Mag, 1200-1400
