Alkaline level

First I want to thank Phil for a very informative talk about Alkaline and it's effect on Calcium and the reef system.

Brian picked up an alkaline test kit yesterday but the instructions don't give a chart with optimum levels and we couldn't remember what level you, Phil, said was optimum. The calcium is running about 500 and I don't dose calcium. I need to know what level the alkaline should be at. Thanks, Lana

I would try not to run any lower than 3.0 Meq/L or 9 dkh. Do not dose a lot at a time or you will have pH concerns.

I have to say I have had no problem with levels of Alk at 2.5-2.8 BUT I have seen faster growth and better polyp extension when my Alk is at 3 mq/L. As Phil said I suggest a slow drip of Alk or if you wish you could pour in half or a 1/4 the needed amount over a period of time as long as it is not all dosed at once you will have better luck IMO. Monitor both your Calcium and Alk levels and figure out how many mq/L and ppm Cal your system is using in a set amount of time and supplement with the appropriate amount to keep levels within the range where you see good results.
