alkalinity question

I just purchased the sea test alk test kit.

Does anyone else use this sea test kit?



What should my alkalinity be?

My LFS suggests 8-10 but this sounds high to me.

I think alk should be at around 8-10. 8 being natural sea water so thats what you should have.

Sea test only tests up to 7 meq/L


Is there a way to measure higher values with sea test?

I'm not quite sure, but I don't know if the meq/L scale is the same as dKH. Most people refer to alkalinity in dKH. does it say the average range is in the 3.10-3.2 range? I think that that's the norm for the other scale, but not sure, but if it says something like that, then it's measured in a different scale, where 8.0 would be OFF THE CHART. So make sure you know which scale you're using. There is a conversion method as well.

1 meq/l = 2.8 dKH = 50 ppm CaCO3

Natural Seawater tends to be around 2.5 meq/l but aquarium water should be maintained between 2.5meq/l and 4 meq/l.
