Ok friend has bad algae problem and said he turned all lights off for a day to help with algae...water parameters are fine.....alll fish die and snails are fine....what could have went wrong?

Are you sure it is Algae? Maybe it is Dino's? Can we have more information on the tank? Size, water params, filtration, lights, fish, inverts, ec?????

All parameters are not fine then. Fish don't die for no reason. What is the source of the algae, is it overfeeding, not using RO/DI water, overstocked bio load or too many fish, poor circulation, direct sunlight, poor lighting or wrong spectrum, no biological filtration, wrong type of filtration for application.........
Algae is a sign of high nitrates for one thing which can be directly linked to several of the things above.
How old is the system, what size is it, was it cycled properly, does it contain messy fish like triggers or puffers......

Turnign off lights for a day isnt going to do anything Nuisance algae will outlive your corals without light. YOu ned to get to the source of the problem. Also I highly dought that algae is killing you fish anyways. If your test kits are showing all good you might have bad kits.
