Allardi vs Gaster

How can you tell the difference? My lfs has a fish listed as Allardi. I'm super confused, all pics look the same to me. Is $45 too much to pay for one? Thanks

As adults it is pretty easy. Allardi have white tails and gasters have black tails. As juvis it is sometimes a little more difficult. What I use to ID allardi if there is a doubt, is allardi at whatever age will always have at least some yellow (often just a little upward pointing triangle in adults) at the forward base of their tail before the actual fin starts.

The other thing is that the odds of a chrystogaster showing up mis-IDed in your LFS is pretty slim. They live on a very isolated island and wouldn't be included accidentally with a group of allardi or clarki.

As far as price goes, that is up to you. $45 is a fair price for an allardi. I think gasters would go for between $200 - $500 a piece.

i found my allardis one for 14 and the other for 20$ my first one i bought the lfs told me it was a sebae

Could you post pics? That is below wholesale for allardis. Its hard to believe a shop owner would pay for a higher end clown and then forget and sell it at a lower price.

Well, its not a gaster. They have a third stripe at the base of the tail. I can't make a 100% allardi ID. (It could be a clarki) But from the face, I would say I'm 95% sure that it is an allardi.
