I have had alveos and gonis and also currently am adding other exotic pieces. I've had my alveopora for 9 months now and it did grow a lot. Goniporas(red, purple) are the tougher ones and I've had those for over a year with great growth as well. The ones that are difficult to be kept are the green flowerpot(gonipora), the common types you see at most LFS.
It is noticed recently that it is also possible to keep them long term as well but feeding is necessary. I feed my tank "Gonipower" which is a zooplankton mix and if you search about this will notice feeding a seem to have been the missing link to their early vanishing.
I have however not fed the tank and they kept growing so I would say feed to make sure you have all it needs in case you end up with a higher maintenance piece.
