Ammonia Problems

Interesting posts, Bruno -- but do you really think Bioballs are the magical cure for this? The OP made the mistake of adding livestock to his tank before it fully cycled, and was making 20% to 55% weekly water changes. Sounds like nitrifying bacteria hasn't had the opportunity to take hold yet. With a little bit of patience it will happen all by itself. I don't think the OP needs bioballs, macro-algae, or even a skimmer quite yet. All I'd suggest is getting the fish out of harms way for the time being.

Let the nitrifying cycle take hold and when all you have to contend with is nitrate, then you can start doing 15G/wk water changes, and focus on nutrient export. My suggestion is a good skimmer, some Chaeto, and maybe a DSB/RDSB.
