anemone help

I have an anemone somebody gave me, it has long white tenticles. It may be dying but I am trying to save it. I wish I knew the species, and I don't have a pic. My question is, sometime the anemone brings all his tenticles into itself and then lets out a mucus slime like stuff. Then it will let its tenticles back out and get back to normal size. What is the anemone doing?
