hi I've had an anemone for about 8 months that i still am not sure what it is. I saved it from my LFS 'cause it was small and looked sad, anyways it's base is white it's tentacles are white with a purple tip, it hates lots of flow and doesn't like lots of light, it burrows it's base into the sand. I'll get a pic soon any ideas?

When you add pics, if you can get one of the underside, that will help too.
Off the top of my head it sounds like my H. crispa when I got it, but with out a pic that guess is worthless :)

What kind of lighting do you have it under? Most nems need intense lighting, although it sounds like yours is bleached, and sometimes they shy away from the light when they're bleached if I remember right.

no pics yet. bbut i noticed that the tentacles are stubby, no tentacles around it's oral disk, the base is white but i can't make out if it's got those dots (whatever they're called) on it's base.

it's eating finely chopped prawns for a while, my porcelin crab is hugging it. how do i help it get back it's zoo?
hopefully i'll have pics by tomorrow.

Make sure it has good lighting, and keep it fed. Silversides are my food of choice.

here are some bad pics. i'll try to get better ones.

Hello, from the blurr, it looks like you have a bleached H. Crispa (so many show up in LFSes w/ those bright purple tips and little to no remaining zooanthella). It may take a while for the zooanthella to come back (think weeks, not days). Keep feeding finely chopped/minsed foods and keep an eye out for regurgitation. Not all anemone's have the voracious appetites of E. Quadricolor (who seem to eat "anything!"), and they will reject foods they don't like. Finely chopped mysis or brine shrimp (enriched w/ selcon or kent marinezoe) would be a good place to start, and some minsed silver sides as well.

hth,

Matt

Is there a crab hosting it? I see something in the center that's darker than the rest of the nem.
Definately bleached, whatever it is good lighting, good water, and good feedings of appropriate sized foods every few days should help.

good luck!

there. again the anemone likes almost no flow, it's been liking no flow for 8 months so far, it's been this colour since the LFS sold it under the name "milky white" anemone.
it no longer closes @ night and stays wide "awake". likes sand.

What lighting do you have? How often are you feeding it? It should have regained zooxanthellae after 8 months, so something is prolonging recovery time.

lighting, 1x250w MH + 2 54W HO t-5's. food, it's finicky and eats really small pieces of prawn and just recently brine, doesn't like mysis or megamarine angel. i try to feed twice a week. lets say 1/4 of a tablespoon.
any suggestions?
it did survive a recent move about 4 mnths. ago when i went from 33g to my 90g.
how do i know when it's gaining back zoo?
p.s. this is very helpful thank you.

It looks completely bleached. I would keep up with the supplemental feeding 2-3 times a week. My nem likes clams, krill, silversidess, squid I would start giving it more of a variety. You could also soak the food in selcon for additional nutrition. I give my nem differnt food at each feeding. Chop the food up really fine and use a turkey baster to feed it.

Whats your light cycle?

Your nem should be a creamy beige/brown color, when it starts regaining zoox. you'll see the color start to change. Ours was very faint at first, but became more noticable shortly after that.

Did you already tell us how old your lights are? If not, will you please?

I remember you saying it doesn't like the light, and I wonder if it's a little strong for it in such a bleached condition. Some have wondered if the zoox. acts as a sunscreen of sorts. It may also have been under low light before you got it and had trouble acclimating to more intense light. I wonder if adding screens to help diffuse the light would allow it to acclimate to you lighting. I think the idea is to layer screens and remove one each week or so so that the lighting is gradually increased.

I have no idea if this idea will work, so I would wait for more info and ideas. It's just a thought.

Good luck!
