Hi all I am thinking about putting a pretty angelfish in my reef tank and need to know the pros and cons....

I read that a Koran angelfish eats slime algae ( I would love that ) But how are they as a coral nipper?

My tank is primarily an sps tank

225 gal Nice aquascaping, lots of room

Current fish

5 lyretail anthias
1 big blue tang
1 sailfin tang
1 maroon clown
1 clarkii clown
1 royal gramma
1 algae blenny
1 longnose butterfly

I am thinking about a new fish for my rabbitfish passed away due to a large tumor :(

thanks for the help

What about an emperor angelfish, or a flame angel

I have an emperor and a regal in my reef mostly SPS with a few LPS. So far they haven't touched my corals. When I first added them it appeared that the Regal was picking at my Platygyra but I haven't noticed him doing this since and I never saw visible damage.

cons - there are no guarantees they are reef safe, but I have seen quite a few people on here with regal and emperor success in primarily SPS tanks. I can't say that I have seen much discussion on success/failuer with the Koran though.

pros - they are beautiful fish.

I had (just sold it, getting too big) a Koran for about 3 years. While I didn't have a lot of cyno, I did have a few batches here and there. I never once saw it touch it. Unfortunately it also never touched my mushrooms either. For about a year I had a decent sized SPS frag in that tank too, it wasn't touched either.
If it wasn't for it outgrowing my tank I would have never sold it, it was a great fish.

con- if its a coral nipper then you are gonna have alot of fun fishin him out of a 225 gallon tank!

pro- if you see it eat at a lfs, then there is a good chance he will eat enough food in your tank that he will spend his energy interacting with its tankmates and probably disregard the coral ( except of course for the "occasional" nibble)

imo- Go For It! happy reefing!

As others have said:

pros - they are awesome fish
cons - they may nip at your corals, but sps are usually safe

I would recommend you look at Angels that don't grow as large as the Koran or the Emperor.

Consider the Goldflake or the Majestic for example.
