Angles

Picked up a really nice flame and potters angle yesterday. I have done a lot of reading and research and know that the potters is one of the harder angles to keep. I have them both in QT they fallow each other around but there is no fighting. I know it could take some time for them to eat but I am wondering since they like to graze on rock should I put some in my QT? I am using Prazi Pro as a preventive will that affect the LR at all? Any help and ideas!
Thanks
Charles

Mature LR is vital for long-term success with both fish; IMO & IME. However, I don't think LR is ever a good idea in a QT because it absorbs meds and should never be moved back to the DT. If you have to move it, to avoid die-off with treatment, you'll also lose the ammonia/nitrate removing function it provides. This should be done by a HOB or sponge filter in a QT. A constant supply of any of the dried nori/seaweed/algae products will do just fine for the QT period. These are two of the few fish that should never be treated with copper, IMO & IME. (Probably, I'm changing my opinion on this.)
BTW; you did great research; this is an excellent, pertinent question that may help others. Also, don't count on them staying friendly as they sexually mature. They may get hostile but should be fine if each has his own little shelter.

I would only add that a few reasonably sized pieces of clean PVC pipe will provide sufficient shelter in QT. Also, I know not everyone agrees with this, but I only use chloroquine disulphate to treat angels anymore. I've lost a few to copper and won't try it again.

I have used prazi in a display tank (( full reef )) with no issues, so if you are ONLY going to treat with prazi, I don't see much die off if you move some live rock over.

Many years ago I was pairing up my Potter's, I put the smaller one in a QT to mainly get it eating and settle in before moving it with the existing one. I did put in a couple pieces of live rock for it to graze upon, but there were pieces from my sump that I wasn't attached too -- meaning I was willing to throw them away.

Thanks for the replays. I should have put down more info about my QT. The QT is a 29 gallon has been up for 4 weeks and I used filter floss from my sump to add bacteria to the QT. It has a PVC knuckle in it and a fake plant for the fish. I am not going to use copper unless I see a need to. They will be going into a 150 gallon mixed reef when they are done with QT. The 150 has about 150 lbs of LR that has been live for 2 years. In the Rubbermaid basement sump I have about 300lbs of LR that has been alive for over 3 years. As of today they are swimming around and the potters sometimes will chase the flame but not really pick on it. Last night I put some nori on a clip in there and they have not touched it. I also put some dragons breath in there and tried a few pellets. The potter picked at the dragons breaths a few times and went over to the pellets picked it up and spit it back out. I know they may take some time to get them to eat but I just want to make sure I am doing everything I can. Thanks

Thanks Toddrtex I think I will move some over to see if I can get them to pick at it. They were both in the same tank at the LFS and they had some LR in there and they were picking at it there. Do you still have a potters?

Live rock in the QT is really entirely up to the fish. If the fish is eating prepared foods I don't use live rock, just freshwater decorations for some cover.

If the fish isn't eating, which is the case with a lot of difficult angels, I cram as much dirty rock as I can in the QT. I've saved quite a few angelfish that way, some took months to eat. If it's not picking rock there is a good chance it is doomed, I do not buy those fish.

I currently have a potters in QT that won't eat prepared foods, but hammers and pecks rock and coral skeletons all day long. So I feed heavy and a lot of the food gets caught and the fish gets the nutrition that way. In fact when I feed this tank, the fish comes out and starts pecking the rock extra fast...it hasn't quite made the connection yet. It has been in QT for three weeks and is probably only alive because of the rock. Poops like a horse, so it's getting something out of it.

I'd rather sacrifice rock to the QT than kill fish.

Heading into week 4 with the angles in QT. I have yet to see the poters eat he still looks good and does not look skenny. I do see him picking on the glass and I have tried a ton of different kinds of foods. The flame eats like a pig but I did notice a wHite speck behind his gill about the size of a pin head. I been watching and don't see anymore after a week. I tried to get a pick just won't show up. Should I take action? If so what action should I take? Thanks for any help.

Wow missed that one! Haha glad you don't have to be able to spell to be in this hobby!
