I know i posted earlier about using gravel in my tank.. Does anyone here use it, or know someone who does? I'm just curious.. Also what equipment do you need to start the cycle, i am just doing a fish only tank.. I currently have; the gravel (if i decide to use it) and a fluvol 405 canister filter.. thanks for the advice

If you mean large peebles, IMHO - don't do it. Even crushed coral is too coarse. If you dont want your bottom become saturated with detrius use fine sand.

I strongly recommend to use LR and a skimmer as your bio-filteration. And read stickies!

the crushed coral or the coral based sand will help to maintain your ph as well.

What alexb518 probably meant is aragonite based substrate, which comes in variety of grain sizes. Allow me to say again: crushed coral will be a detrius trap. Preference is sand with grain sizes less or equal 2mm. If you plan to house sand burrowing creatures then oolitic (sugar sized) sand is in order.
