Dear all fellow SPS professional,

I am a newbie in SPS and wish to seek your valued advises :

Subject : Quarantine SPS + my trip abroad for 14 days

Details: I just bought few frags of Acros and Digi and start quarantine for a week now (please see down below photos attachment). As I am going to travel abroad for a duration of 14 days and nobody in my family able know how to test water , how to dose calcium , alkaline and Magnesium in case any depletion of some important element. Due to this , I have bought a Jebao dosing pump but not yet hook it up not until I got some of your advises.

My water parameter of this week Quarantine as follow ;

Ph : 8.20
Sp he. : 1.026
Alk : 8 ~ 9 dkh
Calcium : 400 ~ 420 ppm
Mg : 1360 ~ 1380 (after water change 2 days ago it goes to 1410 ppm)
Nh3 : 0
No2 : 0
No3 : 0
Po4 : 0

So after almost 5 days in a week of quarantine , the water parameter plays between the above range numbers.

Now my questions ;

1) will these few frags will able to change my water parameter with in these 14 days of my absent at home ?

2) if the possibility of above questions is yes, then how I will dose my calcium , alkalinity and magnesium then? In the beginning I am thinking to dose 10 ml per 2 days interval for calcium and alkaline while 10 ml of magnesium per 7 days.

3) if you agree on my plan of above point #2 , then how much calcium chlorides (dehydrates) , magnesium chlorides (hexahydrides) and baking soda I have to mix in RO water for Dosing .

Hope you give your kind advise at the soonest as u will be start by trip within 3 days from now.

Here are my corals in my 40 liters QT.

14 days is very short. Most acropora will still be in transfer shock and won't grow much at all in that time. Parameters should be fine just hope the temperature stays ok and the light is adequate

Thanks for your advise !

Temperature stay at 26 degree centigrade , lights I use are 13 W PL 6500 K white + blue and an LED white bulb 16 W running 10 hours at night time . During day time is takes normal daylight as the QT set outside the house.

Any further more advises from everyone out there will be much appreciated .

Take the leap of faith. I leave my tank to my girlfriend and mom for 6 weeks plus at a time. They don't know how to test or forget to so it sees enough neglect and all my sps make it. One time I came home to 15kh and 130 calcium and only lost half a monti cap. My point is don't worry too much. I just hope you are not give them too much light, from what you said they get close to 24 hours of light.

Thanks for your very supportive words, I feel more relief now. Any way my QT perhaps will not experienced low calcium high alk like yours as I have installed a dosing pump to do this job. Please the picture below .

Yes , I think I have to cut down the duration of lights on at night as my Corals only have about 4 hours of lights out in a whole day.

Ps: I told my buddy , this may be the most complete set up for a QT. I wonder if I really over doing it :)

Cheers,

I agree that in a setup like that frequent small water changes are your best friend!

I would think that evaporation will be a bigger issue than element depletion; and I think rather than dosing, in a tank that small I would set up the doser to just do a continuous automatic water change. :)
