Glad to hear. I don't know if this helps but Hampton Inn just opened a hotel in LaVista right off of I-80. As a side benefit the brand new Cabela's is right across the main road. The trip to the zoo would be all interstate and the lfs, although a little bit of a drive, would be easy to drive to as well.

Is the zoo open? If the weather is decent I might consider road tripping over with the family.

Yes the zoo is open year round except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Here is a link to their site. Even if it is cold they have a lot of inside displays to walk through. The person in charge of the aquarium is part of our club and if you haven't seen it I think you'll find it worth the trip.
