Any big cubes?

I'm planning on doing a 36" cube in a little less than two years after I move to a more perminent home (med school, or at least grad school) and I want to start gathering equipment and know how. I may end up going with a 30" cube depending on how much money I have at the time, in which case my 1/10th HP could work if I go to school close enough to the coast and far enough north that I'd be happy.

I've sketched out some basic ideas, no CAD skills so I will try my best to make some paint diagrams that are passable. I have pretty much all of the resources to do anything DIY that hobiests can do, I have a small number of tools but my parents have tons, my mother having loads of wood working tools and my father having metal working tools as well as construction tools and my older brother has everything I could want for any electrical needs. At this point I just want to see ideas and aquascaping. My current plan is to have no visable equipment, a fuge above the tank in the stand, a sump below, and lots and lots of cooling fans.

heres an older pic of my 36x36x30 cube...its viewable from two sides. the tank was built by andy at myreef creations, and the stand/canopy was built by me. i need to update my pics, maybe i can do that this weekend for ya.

Very nice tanks.

My plan is to go as minimalist as possible. I want to have a stand that exists only below the tank and a canopy that is above it that goes up a ways, supported only by the tank. I'm thinking of puting an 8"X8" column in the middle and using that as an overflow, and running a piece of 2" PVC pipe up the middle of the overflow so that I can run the power to the lights from a power box housed in the bottom, my plan is to have one power cord going in to the bottom of the unit and nothing else, unfortunately I think I'm going to have to have a fan in one of the pannels in the bottom; for the top I will have all the fans on the very top of the unit blowing warm air up and pulling cool air in through the cracks. I really need to make some drawing, or a model, that would be good.

Sonofgaladriel- Whats the green thing up front in the middle, its really bright looking.

Sabodish- I'd like to see your equipment lay out, any chance of a picture with the cabinet doors open?

I was thinking about feeding an 8 way OM with a 1.5" pipe from a pump fed with a 2" durso standpipe, are you happy with the darts running the OM?

Also what size Locline are you using?

Thanks for showing me the pictures, thats some very impressive plumbing you have done there.

while not as impressive as son's tank, i did use his for inspiration on mine. here are some equipment shots..im in the process of making things look neater and adding my Ca reactor.

I really do like the Darts. One of the two has been running perfectly for over 5 years now, the second for 2 years without any trouble.

Sabo- Where did those power centers come from, and can you give me approximate dimensions? It seems to me like moving all that pipe to one side would do a great deal to clean up the look of your tank.

Sonofg- Have you done maintanence on them, or have you just left them to run?

the power centers are american DJ-88 power centers. you can find them on ebay or just do a google search. they are about $15 a piece. the only drawback i have seen so far is if you use timers, you will have to buy small extension cords (6-12") otherwise the timers block adjacent outlets.

as far as moving pipe, im not sure that i can. space is VERY limited. i plan on tying all the power cords together and just some other maintenance. those pictures are really old, it doenst look quite that bad now.

I did a 48x48x36 "cube" that is pretty much exactly what you are talking about. In the middle of a room, all power and water pass through the center island style overflow box. I will try to post a pic later.

Oh man thats a wet dream made out of acrylic. No chance I'll be in any condition to buy it any time soon however, being a college student with med school aspirations and no trust fund.
