Any new hang on skimmers that you've seen?

Stowers.....how deeply did Dr. Tanner delve into skimmer design in his class? IE: Any discussion of efficiency between different size reaction chambers comparitive to bubble production method? If you could arrange a small chat at a meeting sometime as you mentioned, that would be a beautiful thing.

You also mentioned none of his data was taken from reef aquariums. What did/does he use to collect his info?
 
I read thru the article. It would seem you need to accumulate 1 lb of skimmer sludge, that really stinky stuff that accumlates on the collection tower to have a substantial amound of reduction. A 1lb? The article also noted that alot of harmful metals are exported that without an export mechanisim would eventually lead to the failure of a tank. I am not sure what to make of that information.

yea the main reason i wanted to post it was to see if anyone who knows how to read these numbers could figure out if anything that it did pull out was even a high amount. Im lost when it comes to reading them numbers.

what i dont get is how all these companies that advertise there trace elements claim that you need to buy there product if you run a skimmer to replenish what the skimmer takes out. I guess thats a good way to sell more product but it just seems wrong that they can say something like that without actual proof. even skimmer advertisements claim this but there going against there product when they say this so im just lost on how so many people claim this and thats why i always believed it. I cant find any articles about skimmers that dont claim this so to me it seems there has to be some real tests out there for so many people to claim this but then again it could be an amount that isnt worth worrying about and they just mention that they do remove trace elements because they really do but its not as much as they make it sound like. Ill still use a skimmer when i get my big tank but i was just curious on how much they really do pull out and if its even worth mentioning in all these articles that claim this.

Unfortuntely that is the case with advertising with most things and reef products in particular are notorious for claims that just aren't substantiated......of course that's where RC comes in very handy:)

How else can you explain fission nano skimmers even being advertised as functional and Red Sea Prism Pro skimmers advertised as "professional" and rated for 300 gallons.

Additives are probably the worst and some are pretty much a modern day equivalent of snake oils. Some are great products and legit...at least they are what they say they are.

No worries on that man. I don't subscribe to the "on topic" thing. Letting it go were it goes is much more entertaining imo.

this is very true and alot of people spend so much money on alot of this stuff that has all these claims. I remember when i started my first nano I didnt know much and i bought about every bottle of additives on the shelf just because it said it would help and to have a healthy reef you need it but i found that this stuff was not needed and actually might have done more harm then good since they never said to test before adding so i could have been dosing to much but thats a lesson learned. This reminds of when i was into bodybuilding all those supplements out there that claim they will make you bigger and alot of guys on the forums i went to would spend hundreds a month on them and then found out they got the same results without them.

I'm curious as to why he would go with venturi over needle wheel? It's pretty much established that needle wheels produce a more consistent small bubble, is it not?
 
Andy doesn't produce any skimmers with needlewheels. His main forte of course is becketts and I guess he choose the venturi for the hang on because becketts are too large for a HO. I'm sure you could call him and ask him.

Yes well made needlewheels typically do a better job than well made venturis, especially when power consumption comes into play.

DanielJames---Tanner's class is focussed more along the theory of foam fractionation. He talks alot about what types of molecules can be easily fractionated/skimmed and what cannot. We spent maybe a day or two talking about the efficiency of different types of skimmers. All I can remember him saying about reactor vessels themselves is that non-round skimmer vessels are more efficient due to increased turbulence. Oddly enough, most skimmers for reef aquariums are round.
