First pic is about eight months old. Second pic is today.
Does anybody else have this coral? It came from the Solomon Islands supposedly. I have had it since 2004. When I first got it I thought it was a montipora labeled acropora by mistake. It is an acro. When I first got it it looked like a. pinguis in verons corals of the world volume 1 page 212 picture 2 almost exactly. I busted off a few branches/stubs and gave them to a few others but they all lost them. I thought it was a montipora up until it started to branch like an acro(look at the bottom of picture 2).

I just want to see a few other pictures of this coral. And if anyone has any clues to what it is please clue me in. I am not saying it is pinguis. But I know for sure it is not monticlusa.

I agree.. the bottom of pic #2 does look like it is an Acro.. Can you get any macro shots for some corallite detail? I would like to see more pics, it looks like a very interesting coral

I don't see any axial corallites. It looks awfully similar to Montipora Altasepta that always comes out of the Solomons, and usually has very short nubby branches like that.

I totally agree. After dealing with SI shipments for years, I've picked up a few of those myself and all have been ID'd as M.altasepta. I have some macro shots someplace, I'll send them to EB and see what he says.

I agree, definately montipora. Lack of coralites. here is a little blown up, it is not as cear but it looks very montipora. Awsome looking btw though, I would love a frag of it, more-so if it is a monti and not an acro :), hope you dont mind me zoomin in on the pic a bit, I wont use it anywhere alse.

The growth on this coral is real slow. But at one time a new branch shot out of it. And it looked like an acro branch. I agree it looks like a monti. I will try to ge a better pic.

Joetbs, it is not that coral. I had a couple of those in the past when I was importing corals.

Here is the best I can do. Good news is it does look like a few branches are getting ready to sprout. So hopefully it branches like before. If it's a monti it's a monti. But I just do not think so.

Most everything I have was either hitch hikers, corals nobody wanted or trades. I do look for the unusual. I saw a cupping fungia at the LFS the other day. The owner said it just started growing on an overturned coral. I tried to get it from him but he is a coral whore just like me. He said NFS then joked and said $200. If he only realized that if I would have had $200 I would have snapped it up. (My wife just yelled at me for writing that).

The one here I had to keep for myself. For the longest time I thought it was just a common green encrusting monti. It may be just that.
