Anybody have any Southdown?

Just wondering if anybody here has any extra Southdown Sand they want to get rid of or know of a place that carries cheap Calcium or argonite sand (I like the finer stuff). I remember a few years back I couldnt find any stores around here (home depot) that carried itor could order it. I bought a tank over the weekend thats going to be kind of a fish only right now as I slowly build up (I'm in no hurry, plus I just came off of a lay off). It's a 110gallon I couldnt pass up on the price so if any body has anything they want to get rid of dirt cheap let me know. Thanks

I have a MJ mod that I might want to get rid of. It was an impulse buy, and is to much flow for my tank.

I dont know what an MJ is? But as of now I have plenty of flow for what I got. 2 Korrila #2's, mag18 for return, and a 9.5 running skimmer, but thanks. I'm really kinda looking for some t-5's but I dont think Im gonna be able to afford what people want for them at this point in time so I'm going with t-8's for now. But if anybody has any baserock lying around or Sand they arent using?
Also later on probably in a month or so I would like to buy maybe a pound or so of sand off of some reefers so I can get some healthy bacteriain there. The tanks been running for a few years already so its not new, but I would like to add as much diversity to it as I can. Thanks guys.

Two years ago I bought about 100 lbs of Kolorscape sand from Kmart. The sand was produced by the same maker of Southdown - don't remember off hand, but it did pass the vinegar test as well. The thing I didn't like the most was the cloudiness when I put it in, but I think that may be a universal problem. Anyway, it has worked well for me. I'm don't know if they would have it in stock now. I would guess in about a month or so they would begin stocking their spring stuff??

Good luck,

- Matt

Yeah I'm probably better off waiting, but I'm skeptical about that buy something not intended for its purpose. All seems fine at first, then later on nothing but problems. Dont know if alot of sands are pure and free of sicate or anything causing algae problems. I'll have to look into that though. Thanks

I'll be running a refugium with chateo in it. When I ran a refugium with a homemade filter before I never had algae problems (knock on wood now though)

mlandrigan- Thanks for the advise. I researched it and it is from the same company as Southdown (old Castle). Alot of the White playsands are from the Caribbeans. From what I have read it does contain a small amount of Silica, No metals, but the Silica should be fine with me running a refugium growing all kinds of Macro Algae's. I'll just mix it with other brand of reefsand to achieve what I want for a cheaper price. I assume the finer sand will work most of its way to the bottom when mixed with bigger grains of sand. Just thought I'd share if anybody else wanted to know. Thanks

Buy some Reptilite...MUCH CHEAPER!!! I am all for sheap in this hobby. $13 for 20Lbs. Petware House...don't tell them what you are using it for though, cuz they will freak out and try to talk you out of it. I use it for a deep sandbed and replenish when necessary - you will need to wash the HE-DOUBLE out of it though cuz if not it will cloud your water for about 12hrs. I learned the hard way. My cucumber loves it...

Thanks for the advice guys. I couldnt wait until spring before I could have sand in my tank so I have already bought some. I bought it off of Fiji man on ebay. 40 cents a pound for marine grade sand and then 7.95 for shipping. I mixed reefsand in with it and I love the look of it. I still have left over for when I upgrade my refugium. Only time will tell if its good or not though.
