anybody have problems with their fish dosing vodka?
im dosing the recommended low .01ml per day 1-3 amounts

Im on my 3rd day and all was well all day, while looking at my tank my midas blenny who was in his usual hiding place doing fine waiting for food, just burst out of the rocks went cazy and dropped dead all in less than 20 second... My heart is broke i love this fish and i only had him for 2 weeks, he was just settling in eating well and very active..
I do have lots of flow, but he seemed to like it.
I dosed i little more potassium than usual early this morning and the .01ml vodka

any one have any suggestions??
or similar stories??

I would switch to scotch.....JK.. get a QT tank, if you have only had him 2 weeks chances are it was not a healthy fish.

scotch?? whats the difference i dont drink so i wouldnt know, i did get the fish the day it got to the store but like i mentioned it seemed very happy

There have been accounts of white bacterial growth on fish.
That was my experience with my female clown 3rd week into dosing.
By the fifth week, the growth had disappeared on its own.
Now in the 6th month, all fish look healthy and behaving as usual.
It's possible that the additional carbon source fuels certain bacteria which was present on fish in low populations. After a while, the fish's own immune system adjusted to compensate.

No problems with vodka and the tank. Only problem is with my wife who does not understand I am not drinking it only dosing it.

**UPDATE**

My clown almost died the next night??

After laying on it side with heavy breathing and being pushed around by the pump
I was able save my clown by netting him bringing the net to surface and adding an air stone in his net and creating micro bubbles with a spare pump run just across the suface for added agitation... because vodka can lower 02 levels appearently, this seemed like the best course of action, along with a small water change He was able to regain his strength by morning and was eating again by the next evening..

**** WARNING FOR ALL NEW VODKA DOSERS****

DONT USE A SYRING TO ADMINISTOR YOUR .01ML DOSE INCREMENTS !!!!

After careful consideration I think i over dosed the vodka...

Where did i go wrong??

I believe i should have used a dropper instead of a syring as 1 drop =.01ml

This to me is a far better/safer measure then the syring.

After discussion with a fellow reefer we found that the 1ml syring that comes with salifert test kits are off by 3+ drops!!! so i was dosing what i thought to be .01 but was actually .03-.04ish!! This is triple the recommended start dose for my 34

As we all know its very easy to OD on vodka so each drop is a huge deal especially with starting doses.

too bad a had to loose a nice fish to learn this lesson, but hopfully this tiny bit of info can prevent someone else from making the same mistake :-(

We live and we learn

As I posted to the other thread about this, I just don't understand your concern.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1584832

FWIW, for several weeks I dosed on the order of 0.1 ml vodka per gallon and saw no issues with my fish. That's a hundred times the amount you dosed. I think your fish issues may be something else if you are dosing such tiny amounts (0.001 ml per gallon).

Here's a copy and paste from the other thread:

I'm not sure I understand your concerns. A drop is not usually a good way to measure volume unless you have carefully measured what size drop forms on the particular tip you are using and for the particular liquid you are using, as both impact it. I certainly agree that the idea that 1 drop always = 0.01 ml is not true, or even close to accurate.

For accurate volume measurement, a good syringe will beat a dropper. That said, a 1 ml syringe is not ever going to allow accurate measurement to 0.01 ml. I also do not see why you need or want to.

What volume are you trying to dose? The Salifert syringe will be quite good at dosing 0.1 to 1 mL with as much accuracy as you'll need for vodka in a 34 gallon tank (IMO).
