I have heard that your supposed to trim it back before you let them touch. But when you look at all the Tank of the Month pics they are loaded with sps and they are all mixed in and around each other.
Nah, nothing in my tank is big enough to be growing together I have nothing but frags and a few small colonies now.
However, I have seen the same or similar species that are fine touching, but I would not recommend it with different species. It is in most corals nature to fight off other encroaching colonies to maintain their foothold.
I have had several tanks where eventually SPS will touch. If the colonies are big the amount of damage done to the parts touching each other is insignificant compared to the size of the coral.......but the parts that touch do usually die so if a small frag or colony gets stung (it's actually eaten) it can kill the frag or a significant portion of the colony.
It depends on the species. Some corals will touch and exchange zoozanthellea, and pigmentation (green jacket is most common), while others will have a full out war in the night time. They will literally digest each other alive!
CORAL magazine has a good article on this. Green jacket is really cool. So if a coral with natural neon green pigmentation touches a coral with out, ocationally they will merge tissue and exchange zoozanthellea and the green pigments. The coolest thing is it will spread through the whole coral, then go away after a month or two.
