Another alternative would be to remove a lot of he substrate and work on droplets of water, this requires control to prevent misting which would be blown straight out of the system. Maybe drip plates staggered in height would work, if all were kept level.
The eggcrate will give better cooling as the water will have much more surface area to interface with the air. If you've ever seen the large biotowers from Aquanetics, they use cooling tower fill, which closely resembles eggcrate.
Funny, in cooling towers and wastewater treatment (aquariums included) trickling filters, they use the same media. In one you dont want the bacteria to grow, in the other you want it full of bacteria.
your idea would prob. work.....but why making it so complicated...just get a mini fridge; send a bunch of tubing trough it and if your lucky, ull have some extra space for a beer or two.
your solution does not actually work. It has been tried many times, and, on a 900g system is totally ineffective. On a 10g tank it does work, but the cooling/volume is way too high.
