Anyone from Stillwater?

I am interested in changing my 55 gallon freshwater tank into a saltwater tank. If anybody is local and wouldn't mind meeting up that would be great. I still have a lot to learn.

[welcome]

 Hi there. I'm from Stillwater and know quite a few other people as well. Feel free to give me a PM with any questions or just ask on here. Everyone in COMAS is more than happy to help. In fact, I have lots of tanks that are in various stages of being turned into saltwater tanks. You name it, I can do it except caprentry. That's nIx_tank's department ;)

Welcome and like Travis said, there are lots of resources on COMAS to use.

If you have questions or just want to see another tank talk, give me a hollar.

I have set up several tanks and had good luck with all(so far).

Welcome!

I guess that I am the carpentry guy, along with the glass guy.

I would say I am the jack of all trades, and master on none.

Once again, welcome! You have definitely found a really good resource, COMAS & this board.

Nick

As Steve said if you need any help or have questions just shoot any of us a pm. Oh and welcome.

Man, you stillwater guys.... I am so jealous...

rADCAT: Stillwater is a GREAT place for a reefer to be, as far as help is concerned. IMHO, some of the best reef knowledge in the state is in Stillwater. Those folks have already spoken up. Trust them as they know what they are doing.

Patience and have fun! :)

You forgot about me ;p

I live in stillwater also, at the moment, I am staying in dallas, working on some cool fish tanks as a service tech for a LFS down here. I will be back in stillwater oct 1st through the end of the year.

As far as changing your tank over, we need to know exactly what you have equipment wise, your gonna want (dont NEED to, but going to be MUCH better)to trade your hang on back filters for a hangon overflow, or better yet, have travis and I drill the tank for you. This way you can add a sump and skimmer very easily. skimmers are dirty dirty things, and hanging one on the back of a tank is a real pain. If you are wanting to go reef then your gonna want live rock in the tank, if you only want fish, then your gonna want a sump with a BIO ball chamber. And also the best advice I can give you from one "stillwateran" to another is:

AND PLEASE DO NOT GO TO AQUAMART FOR ANYTHING MARINE RELATED, AS THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE DOING.

Hey, we need to get together sometime, Youngsilver. PM me your Dallas contact info and we can work something up next week, eh?

Whoops, sorry for the interruption - please continue your regularly scheduled thread...

haha I don't know that much about saltwater but I think I already know more than they do :D He's a nice guy but even he told me his knowledge is limited.

BTW I had a lot of fun last night. Thanks for showing me around Travis. Thanks for letting me borrow those books too. It was very good to meet Steve and Nick also. All of your tanks were awesome. I can't wait to set mine up

No problem. I'm glad that we could overload your brain with information  Now for the coup de grace is to see Paul Whitby (pwhitby) 600g tank and Pamela (Pamela) 540g tank. :D Then you will be hooked on marine aquariums or scared by the expansive hobby. One or the other :lmao:

Are they in the Stillwater area too?

I went to Home Depot last night and they didn't have any crushed limestone. Where did you get yours at?

I got lucky and had YoungSilver bring it up with him one weekend because we knew that Dallas, TX had it. Captbunzo, I know you're reading this thread. Where did you get yours?

Paul and Pamela are in the Edmond/Northern OKC area.

Dallas, TX of course. :)

I am more then happy to bring some up. However, I will not likely be in the area until the September meeting, and there is a chance I may have a scheduling conflict with that.

Really, I suspect that there should be some of the stuff much closer. While the exact location of it within a store can be a little tricky, I suspect that many (if not most) Home Depots will carry it.
