Anyone have an 8' tank against a wall?

I've been kinda playing (not "planning", not to my girlfriend anyway) an 8' tank but I don't have a dedicated fish room per se.

I have a closet next to my current tank where all my ballasts and top off and resivoir and other jazz go but nothing available right behind the tank.

Does anyone have an 8' tank against a wall who could give me some pointers about precautions ect? I would probably never be able to get back there in the event of a problem with a bulkhead or the like. I'd have about 8-10" available between the wall and tank.

Cheers, ,

my 98" tank is againt a wall.. i did not do a closed loop or have any plumbing behind the tank for that reason.. you will never be able to get back there if something goes wrong.. so i uses tunzes

i had my overflows look like this so i can have both the drain, return and dryline go through the tank...

Sounds like a pretty big plan! :)

My tank has a closed loop and in all honesty I wish I had went with Tunzes (although now I'd probably use those new Hydor Koralia pumps that are super cheap)....

Imagine coming home to this:

The fitting was just not screwed tight enough into the bulkhead and it started to leak after running for a number of months.

That and my large closed loop pump uses a LOT of power; around $14 per month on its own by my calculations..

I too have plans for a larger tank one day. It'll be around 8' x 4' and be in my basement. I plan to NOT use a closed loop on that one.

^ Tyler, yeah, that's EXACTLY what I'm talking about.

Hey, I went with an adult choclate yellow mimic tang instead of the powder blue BTW. He is doing just great in my QT as we speak, thanks again for your help.

Looks like the adult pictured here, it's BEAUTIFUL, I couldn't resist.

This tank won't materialize for quite some time yet. I am going "no holds barred" on this one though. I absolutly hate regretting not doing somthing that I could have done better or right the first time you know what I mean so I am going to to a TON of prelimenary planning so I can "stick the landing" so to speak. A big thing for me is reducing power consumption and I am saving here also by going with tunze/vortech over a large pump as well I think.

I was planning on going with all vortechs (As I have one now and another on the way) but I think I'm going to maybe change over to tunze.

Yup, I used to be a big closed loop advocate, but not so much now.

Tunzes or Vortechs would work great too. I'll have to see what is available when I do my huge tank too (which will be in 5 years at least)..

I enjoyed planning my current tank, but wow have I learnt many things along the way that would make me change some decisions.

I wonder I could convince MB Hydro to give us power smart incentives to upgrade to Tunze pumps instead of the closed loop? Lol.

Wow, that's a gorgeous looking fish! Great choice! Not something you see every day!

The 90 I am running now is my first salt tank and has basically been a grand experiement for me. There is a lot I will take away from this tank when I go into a new one. There is a LOT of things that I would do differently next time around.

Yeah, I am probably about a year away from even buying the tank itself let alone the rest of the equipment. I am trying to buy equipment now for my 90 (like CA rx and Kalk reactor ect) that will also work in a much larger setup.... that's the plan anyway.

I've been careful to chose things that will transfer over to a huge tank too. Big Ca reactor, skimmer, sump, etc..

Now to win the lottery..

How do you like the vortechs overall? They are so expensive, are they worth it over a tunze?
BTW I've got a 7 ft tank that sits along the main support beam in my house. It's heavily reinforced by 90 degree steel angles bolted to the main beam and floor joists.
I'm sure you'll do your homework when the time comes to planning the tank upgrade.:)
