Anyone have opinions on Purigen?

I've been running that and some carbon through a cannister filter for a few weeks now. I have a sump, filter sock, and protein skimmer as well. I have been having problems maintaining calcium and alk, and haven't been able to figure out why. As for the purigen, does it seem to pull proteins etc as directed? Or is it overrated? Any problem with running the carbon and purigen periodically?

I don't know really. I was looking for a silver bullet some time ago and tried Purigen. It didn't make any noticeable difference on my tank. There are lots of folks that love it though.

No noticeable difference too. Stopped using, after finishing the first bottle. It seems, that if it pulls out nitrogenous compounds, it does it very slowly and in very small quantities.

Ca and alkalinity: if your test kits are good, then you may check if the detritus accumulates in the tank somewhere, without being removed. Redirecting flow or cleaning this part may help partially with alkalinity. But 2-3 times a week dosing still may be necessary.

Is you canister filter reasonably clean after 3 days of use? I had to clean mine every 3 days, or water started fouling - unlike protein skimmer, that removes waste from circulation, and micron socks, that can be changed every day or two, canister filter recirculated water through the debris, collected on filter media. Nothing new to you in this, of course.

Ca - if you have high calcium consumption in your tank, not precipitation, than just dose Ca, it's not difficult, just part of routine, together with water top-offs. This should be not related to proteins.
