Anyone try GARF Grunge?

Let me clear that up a bit Amy, I tried the GARF thing years ago when I was new and there was no CVRC or anyone local to really help :) All we had were 2 real local sources for information and I only had one as I did'nt know Jim yet. That's what we used to have before I was crazy enough to pull you all together into the CVRC LOL. I bought into the whole save the ocean grow your own reef thing but quickly realized you didn't need to send money off to strangers to do that when you could teach each other, make a difference and benefit here at home. Anyone is free to believe all the hype but after a few years you will come to see, like all of us that what you have in your own back yard is far more valuable that anything in someone else's.
Luckily I found RC early on. Around 2000 most of the major reef boards had flaming rounds of "GARF war" threads going on. They made any barebottom or zeo thread of today mild by comparison.
Chucker shut down RDO for 2-3 days because of the fighting and I think LarryM threatened to do the same here. RDO actually use to have an archive called GARF wars but it looks like they're finally gone.
I do remember Sally Jo (think that's her name) relating reef keeping to flower gardening. That what made me think I could do a reef tank.

The Marco Rock? They sell it for $2.50 a lbs but shipping which happens to be nothing (quoted $19.78 for 50 lbs). My rough numbers has uncured Fiji being $4.61 lbs. shipped and uncured Marshall $5.67 lbs. shipped. What does Fiji and Marshall cost locally?

I can not discuss this here but I can tell you if you know where to look and have the right connections you can do just as good, the internet is not always the answer, talking to real live humans can yield better results. Oh BTW Im not against old coral heads as LR, Tonga is exactly that. I'm against illegal harvesting of LR and I think anyone who is serious about this hobby will agree with that statement. Either we police our hobby or someone else will do it for us eventually, it's our responsibility.

Best of luck

let me check around I might know where to come up with some nice rock for you for a couple of bucks a pound.

Just need to make sure he is willing to sell.

He has decided to turn the 125 tank back to freshwater. But also mentioned setting up another tank to hold the live rock incase any family members ever wanted it.

In my experience, information from internet message boards has been invaluable with so many different things. I appreciate the input of 'real live humans' very much but I do not put their opinion and experience over the of a consensus of a large internet user base.

Good point and I completely agree. Do you think that the rocks offered by Marco are illegally harvested?

Thanks so much for the offer but unfortunately I would not be ready to take any rock even if it was available. These post are purely academic at the moment. Maybe someday I will have a large container of salty water to talk about

I will say that I'm thinking about a much much smaller version to start with and get some things going. I will have some more research to do which may be the topic of another thread. ;)

I like Fiji rock, you cannot really find dry fiji locally. I like it because it is probably the most poruous rock I know of. If Marco is selling dry Fiji, it would be a good rock to use.

I can only give advice here, you will likely find out that most people on forums actually know very little and are mostly repeating others who have had experience. Again that's why we have a local club, I know these people and trust there opinions because I talk to them and get to know them in person. If my tank has problems I can call them up and get help, or replacement frags. I can't do that with total strangers nor would I trust to.

As for the Markos being illegally harvested, nope I never said that, but I believed and pushed Reef Rock as "reef safe" for years because that's what we were told, you just never know man be careful.
