Anyone use Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime??

I recently ordered 5 lbs. of Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime as a substitute for the Kent Marine Kalkwasser that I have been using in my top off water. The kalkwasser mix here at my LFS runs around $20 a pound versus the $4 a pound for the pickling lime. My only concern now is that nowhere on the package of pickling lime does it list the ingridient. Shouldn't it say calcium hydroxide somewhere? On the Mrs. Wages website it refers to it as calcium oxide????

Is this stuff safe to use or should I just stick with Kalkwasser? Do I mix it in the same ratio as kalk (2 tsp/gallon)? If anyone is using this as a alkalinity/calcium addition to their top off water, Id love to hear any comments concerning this.

I think Im gona hold off on using this stuff untill I get some positive feedback from others that have used it.

Yep. Thats what I have here. Pickling LIME not salt. Thanks for the reply Randy. As always, your input is much appreciated here on this forum. When it comes to matters of reef chemistry, I always go by what you say :)

Thanks guys. I feel much better now. It's hard to believe the difference in price for basically the same chemical. It never fails to amaze me how much of a price increase something has just because it is related to the aquarium hobby. If you have ever looked at pond/fountain pumps at Lowe's or Home Depot you know what I'm talking about. Evidently the same is true for Calcium Hydroxide.

$25 a pound vs. $4 a pound is a very big difference in my wallet. Looks like now I can afford some new corals/fish lol. :)

I used Mrs. Wages for about the first two years into this hobby. I have a Calcium reactor now, And I still use it, just not as much as before. I mix it into the top off water and let the auto top off put it in the tank. A++ IMO.

I got the idea from Randy ;)

You've discovered the secret of riches in the aquarium trade -- find something that sells for $5 per boxcar load, and repackage it at $50 per ounce :D

Well, there is still something to be said for the local fish store.

They have overhead and still need to support a living. Even if you buy some things in bulk, please try to support your lfs whenever you can.

What a great country America. :)
