I am looking into getting a Nikon D40X. Anyone use one for their reef photography? Got any pics you'd like to share? What about other feelings on the camera?
First thing to realize with DSLR photography is that the camera *body* has only a modest amount to do with the photo. The lens is where much of the functionality comes in. A mid-range camera body with a high end piece of glass will still produce amazing shots.
The D40x is supposed to be a very nice and capable camera. I personally have not used one but did get the opportunity to play around with it in a store. I personally use a D200. I like the larger body size and heft of the D200 but I have to admit that the compactness of the D40x in comparison was somewhat attractive for travel and such.
Overall it is not a bad camera, but you will be limited into a set catagory of lenses that can operate on the body due to the lack of a drive motor pin. You might want to consider something like the D70s or D50 if that is going to be a concern for you. While you still would have at least a good 12 or 15 lenses to choose from if you went the D40x route, many folks consider this limitation a drawback.
If you have not already, read up on the camera at www.dpreview.com for a bit of technical review on the camera and its performance values.
NeveSSL, I just went through the same process you're going through. I narrowed my search down to the Nikon D40X, Nikon D50, Sony A100 Alpha or the Canon Rebel Xt. I ended up getting a great deal on a used Rebel Xt just a few days ago, so went that route. They're all very capable camera bodies. They all have very similar feature (the Sony does have an Image Stabilizing body) and they'll all be very good cameras in the hands of someone willing to learn how to use the..AND give the right lenses are attached. In my research, I did fine a lot of info on the "Kit" lenses. Nikon and Sony do offer better kit lenses than the Cannon...IMO. Another thing to consider is the D50...it was recently replaced by the D40 and D40X but I've read a lot of things that say it's a better camera body and can now be had much cheaper. Check out the review site listed above for a lot of great information.
I found that with the above list of cameras, it basically comes down to which one feels better in each person's hands, which feels more comfortable to use and carry around. They're all great cameras!! Good luck!!!
I'm gonna be doing a lot of research. I may not even buy for 6 months to a year. My wife and I are considering a trip to Europe next year, so I'd like to get one before then. Not to mention I'm about to get my tank setup!
Right now I'm most worried about getting my tank up... but after that I'm going to do more research.
The XT is the most popular dslr on the internet, that many people can't be wrong. Go to photography-on-the.net and do a search on it. I have been obsessivly researching for close to 2 weeks now, and decided an XT is perfect for what I need.
I just won a NEW XT, in a box with kit lense on ebay for 500.00.
