Anyone using Kati Ani for making water?

I have been considering one of these units. Our water bill has been getting a bit out of control lately.

Does anyone use one of these? How hard is it to recharge the filters? How long do the filters last before they need a recharge? Do you measure the TDS?

Thanks

I acutally do have a second membrane.

We used 8400 gallons of water last month, that is over 250g a day.

I don't see how that is possible.

I checked my meter last night at 8pm and will check it again tonight to see how much we use. I am also going to check it the next time I make a batch of salt water to see how much waste water is produced.

I agree seems a bit off. But hard to say not knowing your general usage. We increased out usage about 70% over last bill but i also make about 30 gallons a day of RO (since thats my biggest working container)

Good news is the runnoff keeps my pond full..

I spoke to the guy at the clinic and he said it was more cost effective for him to use the RO/DI, so he got rid of the Kati Ani system.

Ray, that total gallons/day sounds really high. I make a lot of RODI for my big tank every week and I have only seen a few dollars increase per month since I set it up last October.

I found my past three bills which would be for the period before i got my 210 and up til last month. I have increased from a usage of 8 to 14 and my bill went up 11.00 a quarter.

And i know our water bills are double of most people in the area thanks to our crappy water authority forcing people in rural area on public water then doubling the rates.

I have been using kati ani only for the past 4 years. I measure my tds which is 0.

I can make about 400 gallons b4 a recharge with my unit.
2?
1 bottle of muriatic acid and 1 bottle of lye recharge my unit about 4 times.

The lye and acid fumes on recharging are what i like the least about it, but overall it is the cheapest way to make good water and ive got the recharge down pretty good by now.

I can trade the usage of my recharged kati ani unit for coral, live rock or cash.

Do you mean 8k to 14k gallons?

Which unit do you use?

Ray I have one that I used to use an dit worked well. The recharge was a bit of a hassle, but I was in an apartment. If I set it up in my own house, I think I could make it significantly easier. You can get muriatic by the gallon at any pool supply store and, I think, at Home Depot/Lowe's. I used to get the lye at a hardware store, I think. But that was 12+ years ago. If you are using it after a single RO membrane, the time between charges should increase significantly and it should deliver super-pure water.
Cheers!

Ray,
I drilled a hole in the bottom of a 5 g bucket and installed a 1/4" bulkhead bought from aquacave or ebay. From there the bucket is elevated above kat ani units by setting on a shelf or suspended from ceiling by hook. (It's nice to have it elevated for when you have to flush the unit for recharge, more pressure)
I pierced my water supply with 1/4" pierce valve and ran 1/4" tubing up to the 5g bucket to fill it. Works nice.

Jason, do you just run the regen water/mixture down the drain or do you do anything to it before putting it down the drain? I know Lye is used for drain cleaning so it should be ok, but I am not sure about the muriatic acid.

Do you restrict the water coming out of the buckets or does it drain at the correct speed with the 1/4 inch tubing?

I run the lye and muriatic down the drain. You can neautralize them b4 pouring down drain. Haven't done that yet.

I dont restrict the line.

I want to take a 5g bucket drill a hole in it up high to get over the sink and start making water from a sink into buckets.
