Thinking about using silica sand, there is alot of support both ways about its use and diatom outbreaks. Would like some feedback from people using silica

yeah

yeah

My last tank, which was about 4 years old when I moved and had to take it down used nothing but silica sand from Home Depot, sorry no South Down, this is the South where SD never shows its face. I had no problems with it. I had lots of inverts in the sand who sifted it with no problem including worms, cucumbers, and nassarius snails. The only thing it did not do was buffer the water since its not Calcium based.
Another project I did with silica sand in another tank was used live silica sand from a beach nearby. I basically waded out about knee deep and started shoveling into a rubber maid container. It did well. Using the same method for my ex's 45 reef tank. Its absolutely beautiful right now 2 years later full of bright corals, both hard and soft and a nice variety of fish including a flame angel. (its nice being able to learn from others mistakes hehe). I am getting ready to set another tank up and seeing as I have had the majority of my success with the beach sand method, I will probably use it again.
