Well maybe not a Super Hero but helpfull none the less. I have been doing some research on fragin lately. I am wondering if someone would like to post on here 3 threads)or more if necesary). I think a thread on how to frag softies, lps, sps would be a great idea. I think real experience here would be much better than trying to read this off from an article. I have watched a few Utube videos but I would prefer some local advise. And if there is a new local fish store(Hint Hint Finnyas Finn Aquarium) then maybe this would be a good time to set up something where people could come in and possibly watch you guys frag some peices and you could give demonstrations. I just think this would be helpfull. I know there are a few people on this forum that do allot of fragging. Maybe a first thread about the equipment you keep to frag stuff would be a great start too. Well if people do step forward and do this, THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

I am hopeing that they see this and volunteer to set up a "class" on fragging. I am not sure if they have the room but i know that they would probably love to hold something where 10 or 15 people could show up and they could teach us how to frag. I was hopeing that someone would post on here so that everyone could benefit from it too.

Jeremy,

I know it's not hands on but a good way to see it done is to look on Youtube. There are a lot of good videos on there. Search "coral frag" or "fragging coral", you'll get different results searching for both.

Enjoy!

Your a mind reader Jeremy...I was just discussing that very topic with St.James...a date is in the works...anytime you want I'll show a few tircks i've learned.

check out garf.org they have great articles on fraging also if you have a specific coral you need help with let us know.

I have checked out allot of info on the web. I was hoping for a local person to possibly write detailed ways they frag and with the instruments they use to frag. Then i was hoping that a local fish store might like to give a "course" on fragging. Maybe even charge a small admission fee and possibly give everyone who comes a frag. Something like that. I knew you guys(Blugobi and St. James) would personally do it for me but I figured that a small group would be good. I know there are always new comers in our group. It would also be a way to get more posts on the board as well.

Anyways have a great day all.

Id be willing to to and pay a small fee. I have very large Gorg that has now grown to I'm going to guess, around 2.5 - 3 feet in a 2 foot tank. Its just begging to be fragged. So I would be interested in learning how to do that if anyone knows.

Fragging Cliff notes:

Softies: cut with scissors. Then super glue, rubberband or wedge between rocks

SPS - cut chunk with bone cutters, glue to rock

LPS: branching - cut off heads with bone cutters then glue to rock
others - use dremel/razor or smash with sharp chisel, then glue to rocks

Hey lance Gorgs are quite easy to frag. The method I use is to cut off the amount I want to frag from the mother colony then cut that up into smaller pieces. I then use a pair of wire strippers or carefully use a knife to to strip the end of the gorg down to the core I then use super glue to glue the core to the rock. the frags will usually heal and strart encrusting the rock in a few days.

here is some good text with pics...http://www.garf.org/100/gorg/GORG1.shtml

I found out that the guys at Finnyas have come through for us yet again. Here is what I know so far.

Frag class (date to be determined)...go to www.finnyas.com Send an emial through the "Contact" button on the top of the home page, send an e-mail and type in "Frag class" in the subject line and how many. The cost will be about $10-15 per person and it will include a free frag, food and beverage. More details to follow.

Thanks

I have not heard any more from the guys on this as of yet. Has anyone else heard anything? Maybe there is not enough interest. How many people would be up for this? I think this is a real good idea. I have a question for everyone since it seems like no one will post on how they frag. If I am fraggin something like a leather and I get the scalpel out, Do I make one quick cut and hope it works good or do i take my time and slowly cut it? Is it gonna cut hard? I have a HUGE kenya tree in my tank that I would like to frag. There are 2 main stalks and I was just wondering if I could just cut one of the Stalks about 1 inch from the rock it is on? I think fragging the sps is fairly easy but I am interested in how everyone else frags softies and lps. Any help would be awesome to everyone.

Thanks so much
Jeremy

Remove the coral from the tank and place it in a bowl of saltwater. Take a pair of sharp scissors (preferrably newer) and simply cut off the pieces you want. Let the frags sit in this water for ~15 minutes as they will let off some chemicals when cut. Then lightly rubberband (or whatever the plan for attachment) the to a piece of rubble and return to the tank. DISCARD THE BOWL OF WATER. New bowl of water for each species of coral.

Thanks for the offer Jim, Thanks for the Info adam. I might try fragging a few things this weekend. I do not want to be a frag virgin forever. HAHA.

Thanks for the link Gary. I will be doing a lot to my tank in the coming weeks as I set up a new and bigger one :). I'll let you guys know how it goes but I feel a lot more comfortable doing it now.
