Anyone watched the Peter Lik show on the weather channel

RVANANO

SWAGON
I love his work but forgot all about the show. It's on tonight at 9 on the weather channel. Just curious if anyone else has seen it and if it's any good?

Were you the one who posted her a while ago about it? I have watched a few. Would be nice to have that $60K camera he uses :). Fortunately I have been to quite a few of the places he's showcased so far so it's nice to "go back there" again.

It's an okay show. I can't say that I seek it out on my DVR and watch it as soon as I see one though. It's sort or quirky how they try to create drama and make it a "tv" show. I get the frustrations of bad weather, waiting for the light and stuff but maybe since I have been through tons of it I just don't see it as dramatic, it's just the way it goes.

He has some nice images, but nothing that lots of people on these boards couldn't get in the same location with the same amount of time. I'll be curious to see what you think.

I posted the show here a while ago. I like it... a little commercialized for my taste, but the guy is fun. From time to time he will offer some advice. I like how at the end of every show, he walks into his office and finds a beautiful girl PP'ing all his images  I wish my wife would do that

I thought the show was pretty good. I see what you mean about it being a little commercialized by I enjoyed watching it. I liked the grand canyone episode and not so much the Alaska one. I loved that image of the field with the sky/clouds!

I recorded one he did on shooting the Aurora. Should be intersting to see since I have been shooting them for years....

He is a great photographer and has a great eye. which is why he has sold over 200 million in photo's in his galleries. One photo alone sold for 1 million

Seriously?

Okay, I have watched a bunch of his shows now. Honestly, I am not that impressed, or at least have not been so far. You peaked my interest though so I looked him up online. His galleries and the images online, IMO are way nicer than what I have seen him do on the show. Not sure why, but the show, nor the images I've seen him display there (except a few) just don't blow me away.

I think the thing that gets me about the show is how he tries to make it all dramatic. Understood, it's TV, he has to make it interesting. I know Art Wolfe had a show a while back, I enjoyed that more. He didn't try to inject drama and urgency. He told it as it was and spent more time talking about the equipment he choose for the shoot, the settings he used, and why. The locations spoke for themselves, and created their own moods. There was no nned to hype things and blow it over the top. For me that was much more meaningful and yes, entertaining.

Have you seen man vs wild and Survivorman? In man vs wild he takes all sorts of risks, eats creapy crawlies, and does other shocking things. It's not as real to me and seems overblown. Survivorman was more the real deal. He didn't take chances, unlike the former dude he was alone and taking a risk could have meant death.

In any event, I am not sure why this show irks me. He has nice work and I think I would enjoy touring his Galleries way more than I enjoy watching his show. Too bad I don't live in NY anymore. Not really, I love Alaska 100% better :).

Oh, and since he had a bust in his attempt to snag an Aurora shot I'll post one here as Kudos to him for the nice images I saw in his online galleries. Not saying he doesn't have talent, I (personally) just think the show is not that great.

I never said the show was great. The show was good, but I too agree on the drama. What I enjoyed were some of teh different angles he took on. I too am a photographer and do a lot or IR here is a shot of what I do. That is a great shot of Aurora

IR has a very cool feel to it. Admitidly I don't know much about it. I might want to learn though. I have an old 10D that I wouldn't mind tinkering with. There is some sort of conversion/mod you need to do, correct?

To get started I would recommend a Hoya 72 filter. after doing research on the filters they seem to be the best ones. Thats what I started with then eventually got one of my camera bodies converted to IR. Photoshop CS* is needed. You will need a program that has channel swapping. You can get by with Elements but you will need the plugins. I started with Elements 5 and when I got CS4 i could get the whites and blues to pop better. www.spencercamera.com is a good place to learn about it and is who did my conversion

So far the only episode that I really liked was the one in Hawaii where he took photos of waterfalls and used a helicopter to get to them. The other episodes were a bit lame, but still better than spending time at potn... haha :D

As an "aussie" here in the USA, he is a bit of a ....."wanker" , but he is a good photographer, and does go to the extreme to get the shots. I have been to his studio in san diego , and not only are his photos great, he uses a silver paper process that really pops the photo. But the cheapest framed pic was over $10,000. As for the show, I welcome anything showcasing a professional photographer and the extremes gone to to get the 'shot', I just wish he wasnt a Steve Irwin wanabee........

Louis, you forgot your cape!!! Watched a couple episodes. Would rather just look at his pics and not have to deal with the show. A bit boring IMO. If nothing else is on I may watch it again. I wouldn't count on it though.
