Anyone using a Vortech mp40w ? I think I may order two for my new 140g project. Just curious if anyone has seen or used one.

Thanks
Rodger

I think if I could have had the extra cash I would have gone with those, Matt has them or did have them, first gen.
140 project ? please tell.

i've had 2 since they first came out. i really like mine but they can be finicky and have parts that have to be replaced as they wear out. if the tank is big enough that size isn't an issue, i'd probably go with tunze for simplicity, plus the ability to put them on a controller. ecotech seems to be hung-up on thinking 'our controller is better than anything else, so why would you want to put it on anything else'. but their 'controller' is really just a wave timer, not a controller (i desperately want a 'night mode'). it could be that they are working on their own full tank controller and don't want to dilute that any.

I think that the newer ones have some sort of control to them. I've been looking at getting one for my 90 but the cost has kept me with what I have.....I definately like what the size benefit in my tank would be. I have 2 K4's and a K2 and there is a lot of powerhead in that small of a tank....

They have the ability to program for night mode. They have several modes and flow intensities that are programmable for different hours of the day. I much prefer them to tunze as far as function and appearance, however, they do make a slight hum that increases with intensity.

+1 on Tunze's, you have seen how I have mine set up and they are only running at 12V (Half-Power). The new design looks a lot better in my opinion, and I prefer to be able to have the capability of aiming them which you lose with the Vortec's.

I have two of the 2nd gen mp40s and would buy them again in a hot second. They are not hard to operate, they take up very little space within the tank and they contribute no additional heat to the tank as the motor is on the outside. The new 2nd gens do have the ability to program a night mode on them if you would like to have a night mode. I have never utilized that function but can imagine some benefit to using it. I really like these and keep mine on an alternating slave mode which really does an amazing job at circulating the water creating amazing flow.
There will be strong advocates for using Tunze versus using ecotech and vice versa. I would just make a list of the pros and cons of each in your mind and make the decision from there. There are many great tanks out there that utilize just Tunze, ecotech or a combination of the both. It really comes down to what you think are the key traits that you desire in a, either way you go expensive, circulation pump.

Tony brought one in to UA one day and was showing it off and it was very cool. He had a 1 inch wave going. Was very impressed with it and the flow blew everything away in the 40 breeder at full blast!

So I made up my mind im going with two Tunze Turbelle stream 6105 and see how it works out. I have already pre ordered the Apex controller which can control these.
