API Copper Test

Hi there,

I read a recent thread on the inaccuracy or lack of dependability of this test when dosing Cupramine. Unfortunately, this is the test kit I bought before reading on this forum. I tried to test and it was just clear, it didn't even reach the hue of yellow for 0 ppm, what a joke. One of my fish has come down with ich and I have my QT setup and dosed the appropriate amount of Cupramine, but should I delay placing it and it's tankmate in the QT until I can get my hands on a Salifert/Seachem test kit or trust the recommended dosage and try to get one within 48h before my next potential addition of Cupramine?

i was in your same boat a while back. the API test kit is not so great, but did you read the instructions. it say not to look at the side of the tube but down the opening of the tube. i had the test kit reading between .25 and .5 after dosing the second curpramine treatment. didn't trust it so much and got the seachem. it was better, but still not that great to read.

what i did instead was measure the water quantity in the tank and did some simple math to determine the number of drops int he QT. then retested with the API and Seachem. worked like a charm. my clowns and watchman made it out of QT today intot he DT.

My bad. So when I look DOWN the tube, I got 0.25ppm which is expected since it's 50% target presuming you achieve 100% by 48hrs later with second addition of same quantity right? That being said, I'm still new to this so a little paranoid. Still wondering if it's safe to throw in my two fish and just get a Salifert tomorrow?

i would think so. but i'm not understanding, the fish is not in the QT tank yet. i guess it doesn't matter.

when i put the second dose of cupramine, the color is very close to the .5 darker yellew but not exact. if you get close to it, it basically means you are at .5 i tested it with the seachem also and that where it was about.

good luck.

Oh, I was just waiting to get a concensus that it was OK to add my fish to start the treatment, but was just concerned about the reliability of the API kit and wanted to make sure that although I'm seeing a reading now of 0.25 that it's not drastically off and I risk toxicity to the fish :fun2:
