I don't know if this has been covered before but I recently discovered that if you bury the aptasia in sand with some small pebbles in it, the miserable creature will let go of the rock and work itself up through the sand where you can scoop it out!
I've had 4 pop up in the last 6 months....the original one came from a small piece of live rock but I removed the first three and will get that last one tonight! They seem to like having something a little more coarse than sand to get a footing with which is why I mentioned the pebbles and small shells.
I know for some folks with elaborate displays, piling sand may not be an option but all of mine showed themselves right at the line where the sand meets the rockwork and this is working like a charm!
